The Five Thieves of Happiness

The Five Thieves of Happiness
by John B. Izzo Ph.D. (Author) – January 2, 2017

Happiness is our natural state, for each of us and for humanity as a whole, argues John Izzo. But that happiness is being stolen by insidious mental patterns that he depicts as thieves: the thief of control, the thief of conceit, the thief of coveting, the thief of consumption, and the thief of comfort. He discovered these thieves as he sought the true source of happiness during a year long sabbatical, walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain and living in the Andes of Peru. This thoughtful and inspiring book describes the disguises these thieves wear, the tools they use to break into our hearts, and how to lock them out once and for all. Izzo shows how these same thieves of personal happiness are destroying society as well. This book will help us all discover, develop, and defend the happiness that is our true nature while creating a world we all want to live in.

The Lies We Tell Ourselves: How to Face the Truth, Accept Yourself, and Create a Better Life

The Lies We Tell Ourselves: How to Face the Truth, Accept Yourself, and Create a Better Life
by Jon Frederickson (Author) – January 1, 2017

Do you feel stuck in your life? Do you wonder why? Does something seem wrong, but you can't put your finger on it? In The Lies We Tell Ourselves, psychotherapist Jon Frederickson reveals the ways we fool ourselves and how to get unstuck.
Through dozens of stories and examples, he demonstrates that the apparent cause of our problems is almost never the real cause. In addition, he reveals what we really fear and how to face it. In the spirit of Stephen Grosz and Irving Yalom, Frederickson shows how to recognize the lies we tell ourselves and face the truths we have avoided and stop saying yes when we really mean no
Although we may use falsehoods to escape pain, clinging to our fantasies actually becomes the source of greater suffering. This book shows how to create a better life by letting go of our lies and facing reality. It also demonstrates that therapy is not merely a chat; it is a relationship between two people devoted to facing the deepest truths of our lives so we can be healed.

The Pleasure's All Mine: A History of Perverse Sex

The Pleasure's All Mine: A History of Perverse Sex
by Julie Peakman (Author) – December 25, 2016

Handcuffs, paddles, whips the words alone are enough to make a person blush. Even by our society’s standards, the practice of things like BDSM is still very hush hush, considered deviant sexual behavior that must be kept hidden. But the narrow view of what is thought of as “normal” sex a vanilla act performed by one man and one woman is more and more contested these days. And as Julie Peakman reveals, normal never really existed; for everyone, different kinds of sex have always offered myriad pleasures, and almost all sexual behaviors have traveled between acceptance and proscription. The Pleasure’s All Mine examines two millennia of letters, diaries, court records, erotic books, medical texts, and more to explore the gamut of “deviant” sexual activity.
Delving into the specialized cultures of pain, necrophilia, and bestiality and the social world of plushies, furries, and life-size sex dolls, Peakman considers the changing attitudes toward these, as well as masturbation, “golden showers,” sadomasochism, homosexuals, transvestites, and transsexuals. She follows the history of each behavior through its original reception to its interpretation by sexologists and how it is viewed today, showing how previously acceptable behaviors now provoke social outrage, or vice versa. In addition, she questions why people have been and remain intolerant of other people’s sexual preferences.

Enhanced by numerous algorithms that speed decision making and full-color illustrations demonstrating anatomy and technique, this book is an essential practice tool.
Incorporating the wisdom of both academic and community emergency medicine experts, Critical Care Emergency Medicine, Second Edition delivers expert coverage of:

• Airway and Ventilatory Support
• Pulmonary Disorders
• Cardiovascular Disorders
• Gastrointestinal and Renal Disorders
• Neurologic and Neurosurgical Disorders
• Hematologic and Endocrine Disorders

• Ultrasonography in Critical Care

The Black Death, The Great Mortality of 1348-1350: A Brief History with Documents (Bedford Cultural Editions Series) 2nd Edition

The Black Death, The Great Mortality of 1348-1350: A Brief History with Documents (Bedford Cultural Editions Series) 2nd Edition
by John Aberth (Author) - December 23, 2016

A fascinating account of the phenomenon known as the Black Death, this volume offers a wealth of documentary material focused on the initial outbreak of the plague that ravaged the world in the 14th century. A comprehensive introduction that provides important background on the origins and spread of the plague is followed by nearly 50 documents organized into topical sections that focus on the origin and spread of the illness; the responses of medical practitioners; the societal and economic impact; religious responses; the flagellant movement and attacks on Jews provoked by the plague; and the artistic response. Each chapter has an introduction that summarizes the issues explored in the documents; headnotes to the documents provide additional background material. The book contains documents from many countries - including Muslim and Byzantine sources to give students a variety of perspectives on this devastating illness and its consequences. The volume also includes illustrations, a chronology of the Black Death, and questions to consider.
